We continue to peel back the layers at the Central Hotel, uncovering fascinating details from its past. Recent discoveries include early stencilled wall finishes in the Ladies Lounge, which we believe date back to 1885. We also uncovered an early well, likely from the Carpenter’s Arms era of the 1860s. The well, lined with handmade bricks featuring a heart-shaped ‘frog,’ had been filled and covered over but still contained intact bottles and artefacts from the second half of the 19th century — including a local bottle from Hughes Chemist in Maryborough and a case gin bottle. We hope to preserve the well as a future interpretive feature of the venue.
